Video rescripting
Video Rescripting is a variation on Imaginary Rescripting, as used in schema therapy and EMDR. It works like this: You conjure up an image of a loaded memory or event. Then you conjure up one or more positive images.
For example, a child who has been bullied at school can draw a robot that imprisons his bully at school. After which he climbs on the back of the robot that takes him home.
You can make drawings of these types of images. If you record these drawings one after the other on a video, you will have changed the meaning of the emotionally charged event within a minute and with it your feelings.
By making a video in this way, you learn to deal with an unpleasant situation differently. Your perspective and your view changes. You are no longer alone. With the help of a Ninja, favorite cuddly toy, or a robot, you can escape an unpleasant situation. By making such a video, you teach yourself to change your automatic reaction of, for example, being startled and withdrawing, into an effective way of coping. This works because your brain does not distinguish between what you imagine and what is really happening.
It also helps to make such a video together with someone else. You can laugh about it, and in doing so you change the impact of the horrible experience forever.
